Welcome to the MSBOA Music Education Resources Page
This website is part of an ongoing project from the MSBOA Music Education Committee. This group of music educators meets twice each year to discuss music education related topics and to create and compile resources for school instrumental music directors.
Updates from the Committee
9/8/18 Meeting Summary:
We worked on revamping the website--redoing the design, adding links, and organizing the pages to make it more user-friendly.
MSBOA Special Needs Accommodation Policy
We created two forms and an instruction sheet so that it is complete and easy to follow as possible. Large Ensemble Accommodations, Individual Accommodations. Directors complete the form. Director signs off on form, stating they’ve already filled out the accommodations box on the festival registration. Large Ensemble form does not ask for student name. Individual form asks for student name. Procedure sheet was created for instructions. General instructions for VP’s and hosts. This will potentially add more responsibilities for the VP, particularly S&E. They will have to go through registrations in detail and distribute pertinent information to adjudicators ahead of time.
There is a new format that looks much cleaner and inviting! The yearly “calendar” of information is organized for the year, by month. The idea is to get out information earlier before people might be looking for it.
Composer Diversity website (linked under "resources"). Offers a searchable database with over 1,000 composers. From the Michigan Band Directors FB Page, a Diverse Composers of Wind Band Music Google Doc. There are sets organized at the bottom of the doc (Women, LGBTQIA, Composers of Color, etc).
Scheduling Band Programs
Created a demographic survey to collect information about the scheduling situations of schools in the membership. The survey is personalized based on each teacher's situation. By selecting "grade level", the person being surveyed will be taken to a specific page that applies to their teaching situation. In the survey, teachers will be asked to describe their program. Our hope is that the membership can use the results of this survey to present to their administration, if their current scheduling situation for band and/or orchestra is not ideal and is hurting the progress of the music program.
